Personal Growth

Six mechanisms rather than aspirations, and two pieces of standard advice this type should ignore.

Growth advice aimed at this type nearly always amounts to be more disciplined, which fails for a specific reason: a Provocateur can construct a better argument against discipline than the advice can construct for it, and will, and will enjoy it.

What works instead is a mechanism with a stated reason — something this type can test, evaluate honestly and keep or discard on evidence. None of the six below asks you to become a steadier person. Several of them are ways of getting the benefits of steadiness without having any.

The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance — it is the illusion of knowledge.

— Daniel J. Boorstin

Ask whether the objection was wanted

The reflex is faster than the judgment: a claim arrives, the counter-case is produced, and it is out of your mouth before the question of whether anyone needed it has been asked at all.

The mechanism is a single interposed question, and it is not am I right — you usually are, which is exactly why this is difficult. It is has this been decided, and did anyone ask. Two conditions. If the matter is closed and nobody asked, the objection has negative value however correct it is, and saying it costs you a small amount of the credit you will need for the objection that matters.

Run this for a fortnight and the effect on how your genuine objections are received is larger than anything else on this page.

Do not take the other side of a person’s own experience

The single most useful rule available to this type, in every relationship it has.

Ideas are fair game — argue about economics, about their business plan, about whether the film was good. A person’s report of their own life is not an idea. Their day was bad. They were hurt by the thing. They are worried. There is no counter-case to be made, and making one teaches the other person that bringing you something costs them a debate.

This applies to partners, to friends, to reports, and most sharply to children, who cannot tell the difference between having their claim examined and having themselves examined.

Finish one thing badly, on purpose

The shelf is not a discipline problem and will not respond to being told to try harder. It is that this type is paid internally at the moment a problem becomes solvable, and everything after that moment is unrewarded work.

Two mechanisms actually work.

The first: ship the embarrassing version. Set a date, release what exists, accept that it is worse than the thing in your head. The version in your head is not going to exist; the choice is not between good and mediocre but between mediocre and nothing.

The second, and better: acquire a finisher. A co-founder, a producer, an editor, an operations lead, a friend who takes it over at eighty percent. This is not an admission of failure. Almost every Provocateur with a substantial body of work has one, and the ones who insisted on doing both halves mostly do not have the body of work.

Answer the sincere question before you make the joke

The deflection is fast enough that most Provocateurs do not experience it as a choice. Someone asks something real, the funny version arrives first, everyone laughs, and the question is gone.

The mechanism is order, not abstinence. Answer first, then joke. You lose nothing — the joke still works, and often works better — and the person who asked gets the thing they asked for. The people closest to this type overwhelmingly report the same complaint, and it is not that Provocateurs are not funny enough.

Check the wake

Comfort with conflict means no mark is left on your side of it, and this type generalises from that with unusual confidence. The other person is frequently still thinking about it on Thursday.

The mechanism is a question, asked afterwards, and it has to be the specific version: not are you okay, which invites a polite yes, but was anything I said worse than I meant it to be. Ask it of a partner, a friend, a report. You will get honest answers, they will surprise you for about a year, and after that the calibration is permanently better.

Put the boring thing in the calendar

This type will not do a repeated, unstimulating, important thing by intention, and no amount of resolve changes that. But a Provocateur will reliably do a thing that is simply happening — a standing call, a fixed evening, a scheduled review.

Which means the entire consistency problem is solvable by removing the daily decision rather than by winning it. The relationships and the responsibilities that need steadiness get a slot; the slot does its own work; you do not have to become a different person to keep them.

Two pieces of advice to ignore

“Focus on one thing.” The breadth is where this type’s actual advantage lives — the cross-domain connection is not a distraction from the work, it is the work. The problem was never that you are interested in six things. It is that none of the six ever ships. Fix the shipping, keep the six.

“Stop being so argumentative.” The arguing is load-bearing and the world is short of people who will say the inconvenient thing. What needs correcting is timing and audience — the two conditions at the top of this page — and that is a far smaller change than becoming agreeable, which would cost you the thing you are for.

What growth looks like here

Not a calmer person. Nothing in this profile becomes false.

It looks like the same quickness, aimed better: objections that land because they are rare rather than constant, a partner who can bring you a bad day, a shorter shelf and a longer list of things that actually exist in the world, and a small number of people who know they can get a straight answer out of you when it matters.

One thing to watch for this week: pick the two-condition check — is it decided, did anyone ask — and run it for seven days. Then judge it on the evidence, which is the one argument this type has never been able to win against.

What each letter means

Four dimensions, each a continuum rather than a box. Your position on them is what the code summarises — and every one of them is argued properly here rather than asserted.
