Introduction
Raises the temperature of a room by walking into it, and is entirely sincere about it.
A gathering has been going for an hour and it has not quite started. People are standing in the arrangement they arrived in, being polite. Then somebody comes in, and within ten minutes two people who had nothing to say to each other are laughing, the person who had been standing near the door is in the middle of a conversation, and the evening has become an evening.
The usual description of this type calls that entertaining, which is both true and a considerable underestimate. What actually happened is that somebody read the room accurately — noticed who was uncomfortable, what was not working, which two people would like each other — and fixed it in real time, while appearing to do nothing more than enjoy themselves.
Doing that is a capability. It is simply one that looks like a personality, and this profile is largely about what follows from being consistently mistaken for your own good mood.
The body says what words cannot.

What the four letters actually claim
ESFP describes someone scoring toward Extraversion (energy arrives in company and in action), Sensing (attention runs to what is concretely and immediately the case), Feeling (decisions are audited against values and their effect on people) and Prospecting (an open situation is comfortable; a prematurely closed one is not).
The combination is what produces the type. Attention on exactly what is present, weighted toward people, arriving with feeling attached and no pressure to resolve it — which is why this type is so good at the actual moment and so uninterested in what it is supposed to lead to.
Each letter is a continuum rather than a box, and these four map onto dimensions academic psychology measures independently. Read this as a direction, not a verdict.
The engine: what is happening to people, now
What runs underneath this type is a continuous read on the present emotional state of everybody present — and it is a physical read rather than an inferred one: posture, face, energy, the beat before somebody answers.
That read is not passive. An Enthusiast who notices somebody is uncomfortable acts on it immediately, usually without anything visible occurring — a question, a change of subject, a redirection so light that the person being rescued does not know they were.
Two things follow.
The first is that this type does a great deal of real social work and receives almost no credit for it, because the work is indistinguishable from having a good time. Weddings, difficult family occasions, teams under strain, wards, classrooms — somebody is holding the atmosphere together and it is very often this type.
The second is that a person who is that responsive to what is in the room has a strong incentive for the room to be pleasant, and that incentive shapes a great deal of what they do and do not say.
The shallow accusation
This type is described as shallow more often than any of the other fifteen, and it is worth answering directly rather than defensively.
The charge is a category error. Living in the present tense is not the same as having no depth; it is having depth about different things. An Enthusiast may have no view on the meaning of life and an extremely precise knowledge of exactly what is wrong with their friend this week, which of their colleagues is unhappy, and how a room is going. That is not less — it is elsewhere, and it happens to be the elsewhere that people actually live in.
What is true is narrower: this type avoids the unpleasant, including their own, and avoidance can look like superficiality from outside. The money that is not being examined, the health thing not being checked, the relationship that has been quietly wrong for a year — these are not overlooked. They are known about and routed around, which is a different failing and a more human one.
Sincerity, mistaken for performance
Almost everything this type does is taken as a performance and almost none of it is.
The enthusiasm is real. The interest in the person they are talking to is real. The delight is not manufactured. And because it is so visible and so consistently available, people around this type come to treat it as a fixed feature of the environment rather than as something one particular person is producing.
Which is why an Enthusiast who is genuinely struggling is so often the last person anybody checks on. They are the one who makes it fun, and a fixed feature of the environment is not somebody you ask how they are doing.
What it is like from the inside
Warmer than it looks and considerably more anxious.
There is a continuous, effortless awareness of how everybody in the room is, and a felt pull to do something about it that is not really optional. There is genuine, physical pleasure in colour, food, music, movement, company. There is a real aversion to being still with something difficult.
And there is a specific, rarely-stated frustration underneath: being treated as the fun one is a compliment that functions as a ceiling. A great many Enthusiasts are more capable than their record shows, and have spent years being handed the social role and passed over for the serious one, and have not found a way to say so without sounding like they are complaining about being liked.
One thing to watch for this week: notice the next time you make a room easier. Then notice that nobody named it, and that you would not have named it either.
