Personal Growth

Six mechanisms with a stated return, and none of them asks you to slow down.

Growth advice for this type is usually slow down and think about consequences, which is not an instruction anybody can follow. Consequences four years out are not in the register you perceive with, and being told to consider them harder does not make them visible.

So the mechanisms below do something different. Each one makes a future thing present, or converts something you cannot feel into something you can check — because that is the only form of information this type has ever acted on.

Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.

— Bruce Lee

Keep a list of three

You have tried to become generally reliable. It did not take, you felt bad about it, and the bad feeling did not help either.

Reliability does not need to be general. It needs to be legible: three or four commitments — people, obligations, deadlines — that are simply never missed, chosen deliberately, while everything else stays as loose as it was.

Three kept commitments change how you are treated more than thirty attempted ones, because what people are actually pricing is variance rather than volume. And the discount currently applies to the promises you would have kept, which is what makes fixing it worth more than it looks.

Prepare for three things a year

Not everything. Three.

You walk in unprepared on the reasonable grounds that you usually manage, and you usually do — at a slightly worse outcome than preparation would have produced. That gap is small each time and it compounds across a career into a very large number, and you have never actually measured it.

The mechanism is the comparison. Prepare properly for three things this year, and compare the results honestly against the ones you improvised. You will act on that evidence, because evidence is the one argument you have never been able to refuse.

Run the risk question out loud

Your threshold is high, your reactivity is low, and the outcomes associated with that combination are not ambiguous. This is not a moral point and it is not a suggestion that you become cautious, which would remove the thing you are for.

The mechanism is narrow: before anything genuinely consequential, say the downside out loud to one other person. Not to be talked out of it. Because articulating it moves it from a register you do not perceive with into one you do, and about a third of the time you will hear yourself say it and revise.

The other third of the time you go ahead having actually priced it, which is different from going ahead having never looked.

Answer before you joke

You deflect sincerity with speed, and you are fast enough to do it before the sincere thing has landed. Both people move on and only one of them notices.

The mechanism is order, not abstinence: answer first, then joke. You lose nothing — the joke works better afterwards — and the person who asked gets the thing they asked for.

The return is the relationships this profile says you are most at risk of hollowing out: a partner who can get a straight answer, friends who bring you the real thing, children who did not learn from watching you that feelings are handled by changing the subject.

Check whether they agreed

You read people accurately and you are persuasive, and the combination means you frequently get outcomes without anybody deciding anything.

The test: did they agree, or did they run out of ways to disagree? Ask it about the last three times you got your way. You will know the answer immediately; the point is to ask the question at all.

The return is not moral. It is that a person who was outmanoeuvred does not stay persuaded, and you will pay for it later at a moment you will not connect to this one.

Build something that runs without you

The career ceiling in one line: ten years of excellent improvisation produces a reputation and not much else — no system, no institution, no body of work that operates when you are not in the room.

The mechanism is to pick one thing a year and make it survive your absence. Document it, hand it over, put somebody else in charge of it. Deliberately, as a project, because it will never happen by accident — nothing in your reward structure pays you for it.

The return is the difference between being valuable and being senior, and it is the entire reason people with less talent have passed you.

Two pieces of advice to ignore

“Slow down.” Not actionable and usually wrong — the speed is the capability. What needs fixing is narrower: the three prepared things, the risk said out loud, the handover planned in advance. All of those are compatible with moving fast.

“Think long term.” You cannot, in the way the advice intends, and being told to try harder is useless. Every mechanism on this page is a substitute: make the future present, or make it checkable. That works; exhortation does not.

What growth looks like here

Not a slower or more cautious person. Nothing in this profile becomes false.

It looks like the same speed with three things underneath it: commitments that never fail, something that runs without you, and a habit of saying the downside out loud before you go. A partner who gets answers, and a career where the years finally added up to something.

One thing to watch for this week: prepare properly for one thing. Then compare. That is the whole page, and it is the only argument that has ever worked on you.

The four letters

What each letter means

Four dimensions, each a continuum rather than a box. Your position on them is what the code summarises — and every one of them is argued properly here rather than asserted.
