Career Paths

Why this type is paid for live situations, and the ceiling that arrives about a decade in.

The standard list — sales, entrepreneurship, emergency services, sport — is accurate and reads like a set of stereotypes, which makes it useless for anybody actually choosing.

What a Maverick is paid for is performance in live conditions: reading a situation as it happens and acting on it before it resolves. Anywhere that is the job, this type outperforms people with better credentials. Anywhere it is not, they are an expensive liability with good stories.

Risk comes from not knowing what you’re doing.

— Warren Buffett

The three conditions

The situation has to be live. Not merely fast-paced — genuinely undetermined, with something happening in front of them that they can affect. A trading floor, a negotiation, an emergency, a pitch, a court, a match. This type’s advantage exists in real time and evaporates in work that is executed from a plan.

Feedback has to arrive quickly. Did it work? This type needs the answer in days rather than in a performance cycle, and roles where the result surfaces in two years and is attributed to a committee starve them of the signal they navigate by.

Autonomy over the how. Being told the method removes exactly what this type is good at, which is responding to the specific situation rather than executing the general procedure.

Where they do well

The expected fields, with the reason: sales of the complex, live kind — enterprise, negotiation-heavy, high-value — rather than scripted volume selling; emergency medicine and paramedic work; the police and military, particularly the operational end; litigation, especially trial work, where the whole craft is reading a room in real time; trading; professional sport and coaching; and founding a business, where the first two years suit this type as well as anything ever will.

Less obvious and equally strong: construction and project management on site, where problems arrive daily and have to be solved by somebody standing in them; event production; hospitality management; recruitment; auctioneering; commercial property; specialist trades with an emergency component; and the operational half of any business where things go wrong and somebody has to sort it out today.

The pattern is not adrenaline. It is that something undetermined is happening and this type’s read is the product.

Where it goes wrong

Work executed from a plan. Not difficulty — settledness. Where the thinking was done elsewhere and the job is faithful implementation, this type deteriorates, and the deterioration presents as unreliability rather than as the boredom it is.

Long feedback loops. Strategy, policy, research, anything measured in years. This type cannot tell whether they are doing it well, which is corrosive.

Heavy process environments. Compliance-dense roles where the documentation is the deliverable. This type will do the work and not the paperwork, and in regulated settings that is a genuine and disqualifying problem rather than a quirk.

Being managed closely. A predictable resignation trigger, and it is worth identifying early rather than four jobs in.

The ceiling, which arrives about a decade in

This type usually does well early. Live capability is visible, it wins deals and handles crises, and it gets rewarded fast.

Then the ceiling arrives, and it is consistent enough to be worth naming.

Nothing compounded. Ten years of excellent improvisation produces a good reputation and not much else — no built system, no institution, no body of work that operates without you present. The people who passed you had less talent and more accumulation.

The record of promises. This type commits in the moment, sincerely, and delivers on the ones that are still interesting. By mid-career colleagues have quietly learned which is which, and it is never said out loud. The discount applies to the promises you would absolutely have kept, which is what makes it expensive.

Preparation avoided. This type walks in unprepared on the reasonable grounds that they usually manage — and they usually do, at a slightly worse outcome than preparation would have given, every time, compounding across a career into a very large number.

What actually works

Choose a field with a cycle. Deals, cases, seasons, projects, clients. The appetite gets fed by the structure of the work rather than by changing jobs, and the years accumulate.

Attach somebody who finishes and documents. Not a compromise — a structural fit, and every durable Maverick career has one.

Prepare for the three things that matter each year. Not everything. Three. The difference in outcome is larger than this type expects, because they have never run the comparison.

What a good fit feels like

Not excitement, which this type feels about any new role for a quarter and which is a useless signal. The reliable tell arrives around month nine: something is still genuinely undetermined, you can point at outcomes that would not have happened without you, and you are not privately looking for something more alive.

One thing to watch for this week: prepare thoroughly for one thing you would normally walk into. Compare the outcome honestly. That comparison is the whole ceiling.

The four letters

What each letter means

Four dimensions, each a continuum rather than a box. Your position on them is what the code summarises — and every one of them is argued properly here rather than asserted.
