Personal Growth

Six mechanisms aimed at one root — that anything unpleasant gets postponed, including the small things that would have stayed small.

Almost everything difficult in this profile comes from one place: the unpleasant gets postponed. The conversation, the envelope, the appointment, the small grievance that would have taken four minutes.

None of it is avoided out of weakness. This type feels the unpleasantness of it physically and in advance, which most people do not, and postponing genuinely works — in the short term, which is the term this type perceives with.

So the mechanisms below do not ask you to become somebody who enjoys difficulty. They make the difficult thing smaller, or shorter, or scheduled, so it stops requiring willpower you were never going to have.

What you do every day matters more than what you do once in a while.

— Gretchen Rubin

Say the small thing within a day

The core mechanism, and the whole page rests on it.

You do not raise things because raising them would spoil the evening. That is a real cost and it is correctly perceived. What is not perceived is the alternative cost: eighteen months of small unsaid things arrive together, disproportionate, at a moment when none of them can be fixed.

One sentence, within twenty-four hours, while it is still small. It spoils four minutes instead of an evening, and it is the difference between a relationship that adjusts and one that ends without warning.

Put the unpleasant thing in the calendar

You are not going to feel like opening the envelope. You are never going to feel like it, and waiting for the feeling has been the plan for some years now.

The mechanism removes the decision: a standing slot — same time, weekly or monthly — for the things you are avoiding. The post, the money, the appointment, the form. Not because it becomes enjoyable, but because a thing that simply happens does not require you to overcome anything.

This type honours a scheduled commitment reliably and honours an intention almost never, and the entire fix is on that distinction rather than on discipline.

Answer before you joke

You deflect a sincere question with speed, and you are quick enough to do it before the sincere thing has fully landed. Both people move on and only one of them notices.

The mechanism is order, not abstinence: answer first, then joke. You lose nothing — the joke works better afterwards — and the person who asked gets what they asked for.

The return is the thing this profile says you are most at risk of: having a great many people who like you and nobody who has ever heard anything real.

Pick three and go deeper

Not the whole circle. Three people you deliberately tell something true to, before there is a crisis, so the channel exists when there is one.

The first attempt will be awkward. You are stepping out of a role and the other person is not expecting it, and they may handle it badly — which is exactly what taught you not to do it last time.

Do it anyway, with three people, on purpose. Being everybody’s favourite person is not the same as having somebody to call at four in the morning, and most Enthusiasts find that out at the worst possible moment.

Add one thing with a number attached

Your career ceiling is a role, not a limitation. You get allocated the social work, it is real and valuable, and it does not appear in any record — so the assignments that lead somewhere go to people who look more serious.

The mechanism is narrow and does not require becoming a different person: one project a year with a measurable outcome, however unglamorous, and finish the qualification if there is one. That is usually the whole difference.

The return is being considered for things you are already capable of, which is currently not happening for reasons that have nothing to do with your ability.

Twenty minutes a quarter on the drift

You live in the present, which is what makes you good at it, and the slow things accumulate somewhere you are not looking — the money, the health, the qualification, the relationship degrading by two percent a year.

The mechanism is bounded deliberately, because an open-ended planning session will not survive contact with you: twenty minutes, once a quarter, in writing. What is coming that I am not looking at? Is this still the thing?

The point is not the plan. It is that the question gets asked at all, by someone whose default is to let it not be.

Two pieces of advice to ignore

“Be more serious.” You are not insufficiently serious; you are serious about things other people do not measure. What needs adding is a record, not a personality.

“Think about the future.” Not actionable as stated and it usually arrives as criticism of the thing that makes you good company. Every mechanism on this page is a substitute — schedule it, shrink it, or ask the question four times a year. That works. Exhortation does not.

What growth looks like here

Not a more serious or less warm person. Nothing in this profile becomes false.

It looks like the same presence with three things underneath it: small things said while they are small, a standing slot for what you are avoiding, and three people who know something real. A record that reflects what you actually do, and a quarter-hour a year that stopped the predictable surprises.

One thing to watch for this week: open the envelope. Whichever one it is. Notice that the dread was substantially larger than the thing inside it — and that this has been true every single time.

What each letter means

Four dimensions, each a continuum rather than a box. Your position on them is what the code summarises — and every one of them is argued properly here rather than asserted.
