Friendships
Few, chosen for realness, kept quietly — and lost to a silence that was never a decision.
A Wanderer’s friendships are small in number, long in duration, and largely invisible from outside. This type does not have a circle so much as three or four people who matter enormously and who they may not have spoken to since March.
The affection is real and continuous. The contact is not, and the gap between those two things accounts for most of what goes wrong here.
A friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you.
— Elbert Hubbard
What gets someone in
Not shared interests, not proximity, not how enjoyable somebody is.
The criterion is whether the person is real — whether there is anything under the presentation and how much work the presentation is doing. This type has a fine-grained detector for performance and it runs constantly, so somebody composed entirely of their social surface never gets past a first conversation, however pleasant it was.
What clears the bar is unguardedness: a moment where someone says the true thing rather than the acceptable one, admits to something unflattering, or shows an enthusiasm they have not made safe first. This type usually remembers that moment for twenty years as the point the friendship started.
What they give
Attention that is not doing anything else.
A Wanderer friend is present with you rather than managing the conversation. They do not compete, do not turn your story into their story, and do not offer the generic reassurance. They will sit with something difficult without rushing you toward resolution, which is rarer than it sounds and is what people mean when they say this friend is restful.
They are also completely unshockable and entirely non-judgemental. You can tell this type the thing you are ashamed of and receive no lecture, no visible reaction, and no evidence at any later point that it was retained as material.
And they notice. The change in your voice, the thing you are not saying, the enthusiasm you have gone quiet about. Being seen that accurately is why the small number of people close to a Wanderer tend to stay for life.
Where it goes wrong
Silence that was never a decision. The largest one. This type does not initiate, does not maintain, and genuinely does not experience five months as a gap — the friendship is intact in their inner life throughout. The friend, having no access to that, concludes they were dropped. Nothing was decided, nothing was communicated, and a real relationship ends over an interpretation this type never knew was forming.
The silent write-off. Someone does something that fails the register — a remark about a third person, a small cruelty nobody else noticed — and this type files it. Nothing is said. The warmth reduces very slightly and permanently, and the friend can feel the change and cannot locate it.
The one-way friendship maintained too long. Wanderers are drawn to people who are struggling and are slow to distinguish between a friend going through something and a friend who requires perpetual support and returns nothing. This type will carry it for years, feel resentment, feel guilty about the resentment, and raise none of it.
Never being the one in trouble. A Wanderer will handle their own crisis alone rather than impose, and will be genuinely puzzled afterwards when friends are hurt to have been kept out of it. From the friends’ side, not being told is the injury.
The comparison problem
Worth naming here because friendship is where it does the most damage.
This type compares their unexpressed interior — the things they think, notice and care about but never say — against other people’s visible output, and concludes that everyone else is doing more, achieving more, and is more interesting.
It is a rigged comparison. Everybody’s interior is larger than their output; this type just happens to have unusually little of theirs on the outside. The consequence is a Wanderer who does not initiate because they assume they have nothing to bring, which is both untrue and self-confirming.
What actually works
Three things, all against instinct.
Message anyway. No reason, four times a year. The friendship is intact from your side during the silence and is not from theirs, and you have been waiting for a reason that is never going to arrive.
Say the small thing. When somebody is careless, one sentence, within a day. Without the justification — that bothered me is complete. It prevents the silent write-off, which has ended more of your friendships than any argument.
Bring them something of your own. Once. Not because you need help — because a friendship where you are never the one who needs anything is less close than it looks, and they have been waiting years to be allowed to do something for you.
One thing to watch for this week: message the friend you last thought about and did not contact. The thinking about them was the whole message; you have just never sent it.
