Why the artist advice is a trap, what actually predicts fit, and the ceiling that is made entirely of not asking.

The standard advice for this type is be an artist, which is unhelpful in both directions: it implies that a Wanderer who is not making art has failed, and it tells the ones who do want to make art nothing about how to live.

What this type is actually paid for is narrower and much more portable: judgement that operates directly on the thing in front of them. Whether something is right — a design, a treatment, a piece of work, a situation — assessed immediately and particularly rather than through a rule. That capability appears in far more fields than the advice suggests.

Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.

— William Morris

The three conditions

The work has to be concrete. This type needs to touch what they are doing — a material, a person, an object, a case. Abstract work at several removes from any reality gives them nothing to apply the register to, and they deteriorate in it without being able to say why.

Autonomy over the how. Not necessarily seniority: room. Being told the method step by step removes the thing this type is actually good at, which is responding to the specific situation rather than executing the general procedure.

The values have to hold. A Wanderer asked to do something they believe is wrong does not merely dislike it; they carry it, and it costs them elsewhere in their life. Compensation does not offset this and they should stop expecting it to.

Where they do well

The expected fields, with the reason attached: the crafts and applied arts, where judgement is exercised on a material; design of most kinds; music performance; photography; cooking; horticulture and landscape work.

Less obvious and frequently better: the allied health professions — physiotherapy, occupational therapy, veterinary nursing, paramedic work — where you assess this patient rather than the category; nursing with continuity; massage and bodywork; conservation and restoration; animal training and welfare; early years teaching; hairdressing and the skilled personal trades, which are badly undersold by career advice and suit this type extremely well; and small independent businesses where the standard is the owner’s own.

The pattern is not creativity. It is that something in front of you has to be judged, and this type’s judgement is the product.

Where it goes wrong

Highly proceduralised work. Not difficulty — settledness, where the answer is predetermined and the discipline is applying it identically. This type can do it and is being asked to switch off the only instrument they have.

Sustained conflict. Litigation, enforcement, collections, aggressive sales. This type can do it and it costs them disproportionately, and the cost is invisible until it presents as illness.

Competitive, self-promoting cultures. Environments where advancement runs on claiming things. This type will not play and will watch less capable people advance, and will draw a conclusion about the whole institution rather than about the game.

Long-horizon abstract work. Policy, strategy, research measured in years. The feedback this type navigates by never arrives.

The ceiling, which is made of not asking

Almost never capability. Three things.

Not asking. This type does not put themselves forward, does not negotiate, will not apply until they meet every criterion, and assumes good work is visible. It is not. Wanderers are among the most consistently underpaid people anywhere, and the gap between what they are worth and what they receive is larger here than almost any other type.

The reframe that works, because it is not self-promotion: a manager operating on an incomplete record makes the wrong decision. Supplying the record is a correction, not a request. This type will act on that when they will act on nothing else.

The unclaimed contribution. Related and worse: this type describes work in terms of everyone else’s part and omits their own, so the record is not merely thin — it is actively misleading.

The silent departure. Rather than raise a problem, this type endures it and then leaves. Employers are routinely blindsided by the resignation of someone who never complained, and the Wanderer is genuinely puzzled to be told they should have said something, having felt they were signalling for a year.

On the drift

Worth being direct, because it is the thing that costs this type most over a lifetime.

Careers here often assemble by default rather than by choice: staying because leaving required a decision, taking the available thing rather than the wanted one, allowing a year to become nine. This type experiences that as being easy-going, and it is closer to a series of decisions made by not making them.

The correction is not ambition, which this type does not want and should not fake. It is a bounded, deliberate act: twenty minutes, once a quarter, in writing — is this still the thing? If not, what would need to be true to change it? The point is not a plan. It is that the question gets asked at all, by someone whose default is to let it not be.

What a good fit feels like

Not passion, which this type feels intensely and briefly about many things. The reliable tell arrives around month nine: you can point at specific work you would defend, nobody is dictating the method, and the standard has not had to be lowered to keep going.

If the work is right and you are exhausted, look at the volume before you look at yourself.

One thing to watch for this week: describe one thing you did, out loud, to somebody who decides things — in terms of what you contributed rather than what the team did. It is a correction, not a boast.

The four letters

What each letter means

Four dimensions, each a continuum rather than a box. Your position on them is what the code summarises — and every one of them is argued properly here rather than asserted.
