Conclusion
What this disposition is worth, and why "I'm just sensitive" is the most expensive sentence available to it.
Poets are among the few people who will hold a position because it is right when holding it costs them and nobody is watching. That is the plain summary and it is not a small thing. A great deal of what is decent in any organisation, family or field comes from someone unwilling to go along with what everyone else has quietly accepted.
Every difficulty in the preceding eight sections is the same standard from the other side. The integrity that makes them immovable is the standard nobody else was shown. The imagination that makes their work good when it exists is what keeps it from existing. The empathy that makes them safe to talk to is what makes an ordinary week expensive.
It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.

A type is a starting position
The traits underneath INFP are reasonably stable across a life, and they also move — across large longitudinal studies people become measurably more conscientious and less volatile from their twenties onward, and that drift is larger than the difference between several of the sixteen types.
More practically, traits describe defaults, and defaults describe what happens when nothing is at stake. Whether the thing got finished, whether the person was told, whether the standard was ever stated out loud — all of that lives in the gap between the default and the decision.
This type is prone to a particular misuse of that, and it is worth naming plainly. I’m just very sensitive. I can’t work somewhere that doesn’t align with my values. I’m not built for confrontation. Every one of those is true as a description of a tendency and false as a description of a limit — and each puts the required change on everybody else. Being able to explain a pattern is not the same as being unable to alter it.
The most expensive version is quieter than any of those, and most Poets have said it to themselves: I’m not good enough yet. Held long enough, that sentence is not modesty and not a standard. It is a way of never finding out.
Where this disposition reliably pays
Anywhere someone has to notice what is actually being done rather than what is being said. This type detects the gap between stated values and real behaviour faster than anyone, and organisations without such a person drift a long way without registering it.
Anywhere the work requires understanding a person in their particulars. Therapy, teaching, research into what people need, writing that has to be emotionally precise — this is not general kindness, it is a specific accuracy about what it is like to be somebody else.
Anywhere a thing must be made rather than managed. When a Poet finishes something, it frequently has a quality other people cannot reach, because it came from having lived in the material rather than assembled it.
And anywhere someone has to refuse. This type is hard to buy, hard to pressure, and largely indifferent to consensus — which is scarce, and which is worth more than it is ever paid.
Where it reliably costs
Anywhere the work is emotional and high-volume. Scale, not subject matter, is what ends Poet careers, and it does so while the person is doing exactly the job they believed in.
Anywhere self-advocacy is how resources are allocated. This type does excellent work, assumes it is visible, declines to press, and is consistently underpaid relative to what they contribute.
And in the silence. Not the sensitivity — the silence. The write-offs nobody was told about, the disappointment a partner could feel and never name, the resignation that arrived without a complaint ever having been made. All of it is one habit, and it is the one thing on this page entirely within your control.
What tends to be true of Poets who thrive
They made things badly, on purpose, until being seen making something imperfect stopped being frightening. Almost without exception this is the turning point, and it is usually in their thirties.
They borrowed a structure instead of waiting to become someone who generates one — a collaborator, an editor, a standing commitment, someone else’s deadline.
They said the standard out loud, once, in advance, and discovered that most people were willing to meet it and had simply never been told it existed.
They learned to read depletion as depletion rather than as insight, and stopped mistaking a bad week for the truth about humanity.
And they kept the thing that makes them distinctive — the refusal to accept what is merely acceptable — while giving up the belief that other people’s ordinary compromises make them frauds. Mostly it makes them tired.
The last thing
The picture across these nine sections is of someone principled, private, more formidable than they appear, carrying a rich interior that almost nobody has been shown, and considerably harder on themselves than on anyone they have ever forgiven. If it lands, use it as a map of where the friction is — not as an account of what you are unable to change.
And if it does not land, that is data rather than a failure of the instrument. A large share of people sit near the middle of at least one of these dimensions, where the label is close to arbitrary. The description that fits you is the one that fits you.
One thing to watch for this week: name the thing you have not made. Then do the smallest possible version of it, badly, and show one person. Everything else in these nine sections gets easier on the other side of that.
