Strengths Weaknesses

Six traits, each billed in the same breath — and the two accusations this type gets that do not hold.

The enthusiasm that makes this type magnetic and the enthusiasm that runs out are one property, measured at two moments. So are the warmth and the overwhelm, the openness and the absence of a floor, the sincerity and the reputation for being unreliable.

Pairing them is the only honest way to write this section. There has never been a version of this personality that keeps the ignition and acquires an engine.

I dwell in Possibility.

— Emily Dickinson

The six, and what each one costs

Contagious enthusiasm — and the commitment nobody discounted. When a Catalyst is excited about something, the people around them become excited about it, and the effect is not rhetorical. This type gets things started that would otherwise never have existed, and a great many people can point at one of them as the reason they attempted something.

The bill is that the enthusiasm sounds like a promise. What this type is expressing is a genuine present-tense feeling; what the listener hears is a commitment. Nobody is lying and both parties are operating in good faith, and three months later one of them has restructured their year around something the other has stopped thinking about.

Seeing people’s potential — and the disappointment they can feel. Catalysts perceive what someone could be, vividly and often accurately, and communicate it in a way that makes the person believe it. It is one of the more valuable things anyone can do for anyone.

The cost is the gap. The same faculty that shows the best version shows the distance from the actual one, permanently and in detail, and this type rarely states the standard they are measuring against. A partner or a friend can feel themselves being slightly not enough without ever having been told what they were being compared to — which is a hard thing to answer.

Emotional openness — and no bottom to the well. This type says what they feel, quickly and without much filtering, which makes them unusually easy to know and unusually safe to be honest around. People tell Catalysts things.

But feeling arrives without a filter in both directions. Other people’s states land in this type’s body, criticism goes deeper than the exterior admits, and a week with one difficult person in it can be genuinely expensive. Catalysts are frequently described as resilient because they recover visibly and fast; what is actually happening is that they move on to something brighter, which is not the same thing.

Curiosity across everything — and the depth that never arrives. This type learns fast, connects fields nobody connects, and is genuinely interested in almost anything for at least a fortnight. In work that rewards range, that is a serious advantage and it does not degrade with age.

The corresponding failure is that mastery requires a long boring stretch, and this type has no internal mechanism for staying through it. Catalysts frequently arrive at forty with unusual breadth, real intelligence, and nothing they are the best person in the room at — which they experience as a personal failure and which is better understood as an unexamined trade.

Refusal to close options — and the life that was never chosen. Keeping possibilities open is not indecision here; it is a felt sense that deciding is deleting. That keeps this type genuinely adaptable and able to change direction when the evidence changes, which most people cannot do.

It also means the choices get made by default. The job you stayed in because leaving required deciding, the relationship that continued because ending it was a closure, the city you are still in. Catalysts who do not confront this end up living a life assembled by inertia while believing themselves to be the most spontaneous person they know.

Sincerity — and the record that contradicts it. Everything this type says, they mean. That is worth stating plainly because it is the thing most often doubted about them and it is true.

But sincerity is judged on outcomes by everyone except the person being sincere. After enough unfinished things, a Catalyst’s word carries a discount that nobody announced, and the discount applies to the promises they absolutely will keep as well as to the ones they will not. That is the real cost and it is paid at exactly the moment it matters most.

Two accusations that do not hold

That the enthusiasm is fake. It is not, and this is the injustice at the centre of this type’s life. The feeling was complete and genuine at the moment of expression. It simply had a half-life, and other people cannot see half-lives — they see a person who said one thing and did another.

That they are not serious. Catalysts are frequently the most values-driven people in a room and will take real costs for something they believe in. What they lack is not seriousness; it is the machinery for sustaining attention through a boring middle, which is a different thing entirely and is fixable by arrangement rather than by character.

Which one is running

Three checks.

Before committing to anything out loud, ask whether you are describing a feeling or making a promise. Say which one it is. I’m excited about this, don’t plan around me yet costs nothing and protects everything.

Ask what you have finished this year — handed over, done, no longer yours. If nothing comes, the pattern is running and no amount of new enthusiasm addresses it.

And ask whether the person you have become disappointed in has changed, or whether you are comparing them to a version of them that only ever existed in your head.

One thing to watch for this week: finish one small thing you had already lost interest in. Notice that it was not hard — it was just not interesting, and you have been treating those as the same problem.

The four letters

What each letter means

Four dimensions, each a continuum rather than a box. Your position on them is what the code summarises — and every one of them is argued properly here rather than asserted.
